Primary Railway Stations

France has two types of railway stations: the classic stations from when railways were first constructed, and the modern TGV stations from the late 20th century and early 21st century when new high-speed railways, in French known as LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse) were constructed. Some places, where the new high-speed railways bypass city centres, new stations had to be built. In southern France, the new TGV stations are Avignon TGV and Aix en Provence TGV. These new TGV stations bear more resemblance to airport terminals than the classic railway stations, both inside and outside.

French high-speed trains, TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse), as well as the high-speed Eurostar trains, travel at a cruise speed of 270 to 320 kph (169 to 200 mph) depending on the limit the line is approved for. The newer lines have the highest speed rating. At these speeds, Avignon, Nimes, Aix en Provence, and Marseilles are all within three hours of Paris centre and Paris Charles de Gaulle airport via direct high-speed link.

As there is no baggage weight limit and no airport security, TGV travel is convenient alternative to plane travel.
